Card 92 - Impact Configuration SetIND Option

The original version of SMAC includes logic that automatically determines the impact configuration mode for Collision algorithm calculations. The automatic determination includes setting flags to indicate an impact as End, Side or Corner. On occasion, the original SMAC may produce a disproportionate sensitivity to minor changes in the impact configuration which may produce dramatic differences in the SMAC predicted results. In some instances, the sensitivity has been traced to cases where the combination of impact configuration and vehicle dimensions is SetIND logic sensitive. McHenry Software, Inc. as a part of our refinement of the collision interface and restitution logic is also refining the SetIND logic to  avoid the occasional SetIND sensitivity from occurring.

In the meantime, the m-smac program includes the following options on this card to permit evaluation of the sensitivities of impact configuration and automatic SetIND calls:

Permit the manual setting of the SetIND indicator for SetIND sensitive situations.

Permit additional setIND refinements for Sideslap Impacts:

In many impact configurations, after the primary impact is over the vehicles may re-contact as each rotates due to the initial impact. This secondary impact is commonly referred to as a side-slap impact. The options of this card permit the manual setting of the setIND values for the side-slap portion of the impact. The options also permit changing the vehicle peripheral stiffness values in recognition that during a side-slap impact a different area of the vehicle is contacted which may have a different stiffness value.

This option is provided for advanced users and you are cautioned against changing the automatic logic of SetIND. A careful review and testing of the automatic logic, followed by a careful testing the effects of manual SetIND logic for your particular application is recommended.
